What a loan settlement is
A loan settlement is an agreement under which the lender accepts a negotiated amount to close an account that you cannot repay in full. It is most common for personal loans and credit cards, and for NPA accounts through a one-time settlement.
Step 1: Assess your position
List your loan balance, overdue amount, income and any other dues. Decide the most you can pay as a lump sum or a short schedule.
Step 2: Contact the lender in writing
Send a short hardship letter explaining the reason for default, with your offer. Writing creates a record, unlike phone calls.
Step 3: Negotiate
Expect a counter-offer. Respond calmly, stay within what you can pay, and ask for each revised offer in writing with a validity date.
Step 4: Get the terms in writing
The settlement letter should state the amount, the due date, and that the account will be closed on payment. Do not pay without it.
Step 5: Pay and collect papers
Pay only into the lender’s official account. Then collect the closure letter and no-dues certificate, and check that your credit report shows the right status in 30 to 45 days.
